Fasting is required from ages 16 to 60 in the US on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Abstinence from meat is required every Friday during Lent (and good Friday which is technically in the Triduum but I digress) and Ash Wednesday
“When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.”
The obligation to repentance and penance is declared in Sacred Scripture. The US Bishops emphasize the significance of penitential seasons such as Advent and Lent in fostering spiritual preparation and renewal. The bishops urge Catholics to revive the spirit of Advent by engaging in liturgical observances and personal acts of self-denial. They highlight the importance of Lent as the principal season of penance, emphasizing fasting, abstinence, and self-discipline. Addressing the tradition of abstinence from meat on Fridays, they acknowledge changing circumstances that make meat almost irrelevant as a mandatory object of abstinence but encourage voluntary acts of penance and charity in its place. The bishops emphasize that while the regulations regarding Friday abstinence have changed, the call to penance and spiritual renewal remains steadfast. The text concludes with a call for a renewed commitment to prayer, penance, and works of charity, underscoring the unity of faith and the need for spiritual growth. Read more on this here.
